Kushner to Meet Netanyahu After Talks with Hamas: What’s on the Table?

Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and special envoy, will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel on Monday as part of US efforts to move forward with the implementation of the American peace plan for Gaza, which Netanyahu has so far rejected.
Kushner met with leaders of the Palestinian Hamas movement in Egypt on Sunday before traveling to Israel.
Hamas agreed in late July to a US roadmap aimed at launching the second phase of the peace plan, which calls for the disarmament of the movement and Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
Netanyahu formally rejected the document, demanding the “genuine” disarmament of Hamas.
Sources who requested anonymity said Kushner stressed during Sunday’s meeting with members of Hamas’ leadership the need for the movement to disarm, calling for “verifiable” measures.
“Gaza will never again be a source of terrorism for Israel,” he said, according to one of the sources.
The sources added that Kushner also stressed that Hamas would have no role in governing Gaza in the future.
Hamas, which has administered Gaza since 2007, announced in early July that it was dissolving its civil administration, expressing its intention to transfer its responsibilities to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, a body established by the “Board of Peace,” composed of Palestinian technocrats and tasked with overseeing the transitional phase in the Palestinian territory.
Following its meeting with Kushner, Hamas said it had “called on the mediators and the Board of Peace to fulfill their responsibilities and compel the occupation to implement all its commitments under the first phase, end all violations, halt killings and incursions, approve the roadmap for the second phase of President Trump’s plan, and begin setting the implementation timetable.”
Kushner had previously met with representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye, the mediating countries in the agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza, as well as Nikolay Mladenov, the senior representative for Gaza on the “Board of Peace” established by Trump to implement the agreement, according to Al-Qahera News.
Kushner also met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in El Alamein on Sunday, while Hamas political bureau chief Khalil al-Hayya met with Egyptian Intelligence Chief Hassan Rashad.
